The PathFinders'
Prime For Life DUI School is designed
to aid individuals who have been charged with
driving under the influence. Upon referral from
the court system, the client will be assessed
for alcohol and drug use severity which will
include obtaining an alcohol and drug use history
and completing a survey questionnaire such as
the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test.
During an
assessment interview, the client will be informed
of the results of the screening. The referral
source will also be informed of the results
and recommendations. If the DUI Program is indicated,
the appropriate referral will be made. A study
guide will be given to each participant to use
in the program and to keep as an ongoing reference
for themselves and their families. Upon completion
of the program, each client will receive a Certificate
of Completion.
The first goal of this program is to help each
client understand their own level of risk for
alcohol and drug-related problems. The clients
will learn a specific five-step risk reduction
process developed by Prevention Research Institute,
Lexington, KY, to help them estimate their own
levels of biological risk and to teach them
specific, researched-based guidelines that,
if followed, will make future problems with
alcohol and drugs unlikely.
The second goal is to help each client complete
a self-assessment process looking at their own
drinking and drug choices. This will help them
determine if they have already developed alcoholism
or drug addiction or, if not, how close they
might be to doing so, and what resources are
available to them to sort this out.
The third goal is to develop a specific action
plan to avoid any further problems with alcohol
or drugs.
The 12-hour Prime For Life DUI School is offered
in one day long session on Saturdays. Because
some states require a 20 hour DUI school, 12
hours on Saturday and 8 hours on Sunday is
offered once a month.
